“What I hear quite often, and what I tell patients is that hair transplant will make a younger version of yourself. And it carries over into so much other things like improved mood, improved sense of self, improved confidence,” states Dr. Danyo.
What is a Hair Transplant?
Episode 12 of the podcast, “Hair Restoration with Dr. Daniel A. Danyo,” walks you through all you need to know about modern hair transplant procedures and the start of your hair restoration journey.
A hair transplant is a procedure that involves moving hair from a donor site to a problem area. Usually, hair is taken from the back and sides of the head; however, hair can also be taken from the beard, chest, or abdomen.
“What’s so great about hair transplant is that it’s very consistent. I’ve had very few patients that haven’t been satisfied,” says Dr. Danyo.
According to the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons, hair transplant surgery is “the most reliable option for achieving quantifiable and consistent results for treating hair loss.”
There are two types of hair transplants – follicular unit transplant (FUT) and follicular unit excision (FUE). Dr. Danyo specializes in FUE and is a leading practitioner of Shave-less FUE.
Shave-less FUE or No-shave FUE is one of the most discreet surgical hair transplant procedures available. It is minimally invasive and does not leave a linear scar.
The Initial Consultation
Dr. Danyo is one of the few physicians that can say they spend an entire day with their patients and are involved in the whole process from the beginning with an initial consultation to the end with follow-up appointments.
“I think it takes a doctor first to rule out any medical conditions that need to be evaluated and treated first and make sure that you have the right diagnosis of male pattern or female pattern hair loss versus some other type of alopecia,” says Dr. Danyo.
Critical elements of an initial consultation include the following:
- Diagnosing your hair loss
- Determining the areas of involvement
- Deciding how many grafts are going to be required
- A walkthrough of the entire process
Pattern Hair Loss
According to the American Hair Loss Association, male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. While every case is different, male pattern baldness typically starts at the hairline and recedes.
When there is male pattern hair loss, there is dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT receptors cause hair follicles to shrink and slowly kill the hair. A hair transplant takes a hair that does not have the DHT receptor, and when you move it, it keeps the same genetic code in genetic expression. Essentially, the lack of a DHT receptor makes it a permanent move.
