Hair Plugs and New Transplantation Techniques

In the early days of hair restoration, the Multiple Unit of Hair Restoration, or MUT, was a revelation. In a time when wigs and toupees were the most common way to disguise thinning hair, MUT allowed doctors to graft a patient’s own hair into balding areas. Because the technology was not as advanced as it is today, there were downsides.

The most obvious downside was that the hair had to be grafted in groups, or “plugs.” This created the “doll hair” look we all recognize. Hair surgery technology has vastly improved since the days of MUT. You now have multiple options to make your hair more natural-looking. Two ways of achieving this are concealment and recycling. With concealment, you transplant follicles around the current plugs to make them more natural looking. When sourcing follicles we have two procedure choices.

  1. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT is a procedure where a strip of scalp is removed from the back of the head and harvested for healthy follicles. The follicles are then transplanted to areas of the head that are experiencing thinning, or baldness. This was originally done in groups of up to four follicles, but as doctors have become more experienced, single follicle transplants are the norm. The upside of this procedure is that the doctor can harvest more follicles more quickly. The downside is that it leaves a linear scar.

  1. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE is a procedure where follicles are sourced one at a time from an area of the head, or body, with an abundance of hair. These follicles are then transplanted one at a time in a natural-looking pattern. This procedure can even be performed “shaveless.” We offer Shave-less FUE here at our clinic. It is our most popular procedure.

Recycling is a more involved option. Depending on the health and thickness of your plugs, it may be possible to thin them out using a smaller punch than the one used in your original procedure. The resulting holes will need to be surgically closed. If the follicles harvested this way are in good condition, they may be transplanted into a more natural looking pattern.
