FUE vs FUT – What is the Difference?

FUE vs FUT - What is the Difference

You hear all of these acronyms being thrown around when researching hair restoration options and you may be wondering how they are unique. The most common question we get is what is the difference between FUT and FUE. And really, what are they period?

We’ll dive a little deeper into each of the options below.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

This is the hair restoration you may originally have thought of. It’s older technology where an entire section of hair follicles are removed in one strip and relocated on the scalp.

One of the benefits of this method is that FUT procedures using strip-harvesting of hair follicles typically guarantees a large number of non-transected units. What this really means is that there is an improved likelihood of the follicles surviving through transplantation.

However, the big downside is the need to shave or expose large areas of the scalp and may result in scarring. There is also increased risk of long term nerve damage or chronic numbness or pain in the donor area versus the FUE procedure.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE is the latest technology where small groups of one to four naturally occurring groups of hairs are extracted for transplantation.

It is a tedious process and takes lots of time and training to master the process. Dr. Danyo considers it an art to meticulously remove and replace the hair follicles in just the right place so that the hair density becomes more even across the scalp.

Recovery time and post-procedure discomfort is generally lower with FUE than it is with FUT. And the doctor has the opportunity to use hair follicles from other areas of the body if needed.

On the down side, FUE can result in small, round, typically white scars in the area where grafts have been removed. Because these grafts are taken from denser areas, the existing hair should conceal the temporary scars until they are fully healed.

Dr. Danyo has trained extensively all over the world to perfect his FUE technique.
