When the Time is not Right for Hair Restoration – Part 1 – Lichen Planopilaris

Hair restoration is a blessing to many men and women with thinning hair. In certain circumstances, though, it can do more harm than good. If one has an unresolved, active case of Lichen Planopilaris, they are not a suitable candidate for hair transplants. That does not mean they can never pursue hair restoration. It does mean that they need to seek treatment first.

What is Lichen Planopilaris?

Lichen Planopilaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that causes a variety of lesions on the skin or mucosal surfaces. The cause is unclear, but current research points to an autoimmune response to possible triggers such as drugs, food additives, other disease, and tissue grafts. It has a relatively low occurrence in the population, with no known cure. Most skin lesions clear themselves, or “go quiet” within 6-9 months. Mucosal lesions are more persistent. Some long-term cases have been reported.

Lesions on the scalp can cause progressive patches of baldness. Treatment for Lichen Planopilaris should be sought immediately, as long-term damage to the hair follicles can occur. Care is usually managed by a Dermatologist. Treatment can include corticosteroids, diet change, trigger elimination, and immunosuppressants.

Hair Restoration for sufferers of this condition is only viable when it “goes quiet.” If there are any active lesions on the body, it means the body is not ready for the procedure. The danger is that new grafts will become sick and not take. This condition greatly increases the chances of graft rejection and low yield. Once the condition is well in hand, hair restoration can proceed with the hair doctor working closely with the patients Dermatologist to oversee recovery.
