The Hair Restoration Journey Part 2 – Procedures

Procedures

Hair restoration is undertaken by less than 1% of the people who could benefit from it. You are a special type of person. You see a problem and take action. Most people who undertake this journey spend a good deal of time researching techniques and clinics. They take action, but want to make sure it is the right action. This week in our series, “The Hair Restoration Journey,” we discuss the two major types of hair surgery.

What Hair Restoration Procedure is Right for Me?

Hair transplantation has come a long way since the early days of “doll hair” multi-follicle plugs. Today’s procedures offer completely natural-looking results. However, there are significant differences between how the procedures are performed. Here are the two most popular types of transplantation:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT or The Strip Method) –  With this method, a strip of skin is removed from the back of the head. The follicles are harvested from the strip and transplanted to the recipient site. The wound is stitched closed. During healing, there may be swelling around the donor site. After healing, there will be a thin linear scar.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – With this method, follicles are individually removed from the donor site with a punch. The follicle is then transplanted into the donor site. There is some scabbing that occurs at the donor site, but mostly heals within days. There are no stitches, no linear scar, and very little down time.

We, at North Atlanta Hair Restoration, use the FUE method. Most practitioners of FUE shave portions of the head for easier access to the follicles. We take it one step further and perform the procedure shave-less. That means Dr. Danyo retrieves the donor follicles without disturbing the surrounding hair. This is tremendously important to patients who want to avoid embarrassing questions that can come with shaved patches of hair.
