Is Hair Transplantation a Permanent Solution?

Pattern baldness can be embarrassing, but it also can be corrected. Through a procedure called Follicular unit extraction (FUE), hair is transplanted to balding areas for a permanent and natural-looking solution.

The Procedure
During FUE, a few hair follicles are removed from the back side of your head (known as the donor area) where hair is still growing. These follicles are then individually transplanted to your balding spots (known as the recipient area). Over time, the transplanted follicles will begin to grow hair naturally, covering the bald spots. In traditional FUE procedures, the head has to be shaved in places to achieve correct harvesting and implantation. North Atlanta Hair Restoration offers a shave-less version, enabling patients to go back to work with minimal downtime and little social impact.

Like any hair growth, it takes time to notice a difference after FUE. In fact, it’s perfectly normal for transplanted hairs to fall out a couple of weeks after the procedure. But the new follicles that are in place are permanent, and hair will continue to grow. About six to twelve months post-surgery, patients will notice an almost complete hair restoration. Therefore, while FUE is permanent, it takes time and patience to achieve full results.Side Effects
Most side effects from FUE are minimal. However, while minimally invasive, it is a surgical procedure that involves a surgeon making tiny holes with a blade in the recipient area. You’ll require stitches that will be removed a few days following the procedure. Some patients might experience bruising, swelling, numbness or itchiness following FUE, but these side effects are temporary. It’s also possible for minimal, small scars to be present at the donor area upon very close inspection of the hair. All side effects can be minimized by an experienced hair restoration surgeon.

Candidates
It’s essential to have a full examination of your scalp to determine if FUE is right for you. Good candidates for FUE include men with male pattern baldness, people with a healthy supply of donor hair, and individuals who have tried other methods to reduce hair loss without good results. A good candidate also will have realistic expectations about the results of FUE.

FUE is safe and effective for most patients, but as with all medical procedures, it’s essential that you schedule a consultation with a hair restoration expert and have an open, honest dialogue about the procedure, the process and the final outcome desired.
