In this episode, Dr. Danyo breaks down the technique he uses to conduct Shave-less FUE, a unique procedure not offered by many clinics. He explains why the procedure can be challenging and how he and his skilled team have mastered the process so patients can walk away with little to no noticeability.
Not every hair restoration practice offers Shave-less FUE, and that is because the procedure takes a lot of training and practice to perfect.
What is Shave-less FUE?
FUE stands for follicular unit excision, where you take individual hair follicles for transplantation.
That is in contrast to what a lot of people think of when they hear “hair transplantation”, which is cutting out an area of hair-bearing scalp and stitching it in to another area. This less sophisticated process results in a linear scar that may be quite noticeable.
The “shave-less” part refers to the fact that neither the donor site nor the transplant site are shaved before extraction, making the procedure much less noticeable.
That means you can basically walk out of the office looking much as you did when you walked in. It also means not having to miss work or social obligations because you look like you’ve had something done.
This concealment is especially important if you have scars from previous strip transplants, and it also saves potential embarrassment for those are shy about having had a hair restoration procedure.
Does Shave-less FUE Work?
Dr. Danyo talks to a lot of people who think a Shave-less procedure will be less effective for hair restoration. They may have read something on the internet or talked to a doctor who recommended against it, saying the graft quality won’t be as good.
What the doctor has to say about that is that there’s no reason the graft quality can’t be just as good for shave-less as it is with shaved transplantation. You just need to make sure you choose someone who has a lot of experience with this more-difficult technique.
Dr. Danyo says that about 70% of the time for men, and 100% of the time for women, he doesn’t shave any part of the head for the procedure. As he puts it, “We’re in kind of a different world, you know, as far as, getting excellent grafts, and then doing it in a very timely manner.”
How Long Does Shave-less FUE Take?
The No-shave FUE process is more laborious and demanding than shaved restorations, but Dr. Danyo prides himself on his speed and skill of graft execution.
The doctor also has a highly trained team that assists him with the procedures. He says there may be as many as six hands on the head during a restoration, working in concert to get everything done swiftly and properly.
The process may take several hours, but this allows them to get the whole procedure done in just one visit. Dr. Danyo’s unofficial record is 3100 grafts in a single day.
Thicker and longer hair can make the Shave-less FUE process even more challenging, but Dr. Danyo knows how important concealment and privacy are to his clients.
He works on male and female clients with all hair types, and once even restored hair for a client with two-foot-long dreadlocks.
