Inspired by Recent ISHRS Meeting

By Daniel A. Danyo, M.D.

I recently had the privilege of attending the 23rd scientific meeting of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgeons in Chicago. With over 1000 attendees and 70 countries represented, I was exposed to a world view of the current trends in hair restoration. The general tone of the meeting was upbeat and optimistic! Main topics included new breakthroughs with stem cell therapies including Platelet Rich Plasma and ACell Injection therapy, advances in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and showcased new technologies such as Scalp Micro-pigmentation (SMP). I completed a hands on SMP course and placed a deposit for equipment and training – we are excited to offer our patients this new technique in November or December.

The general sessions were tremendous, but my meetings with physicians, technicians and vendors from around the world had much more of an impact. Something incredibly inspiring occurred – instead of me picking their brains for ideas and techniques, the reverse was true. They were extremely interested in the techniques and vision that North Atlanta Hair Restoration has perfected over the last four years, particularly as it relates to Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplantation. They were amazed that we were able to graft successfully with punch sizes as low as 0.75 mm and that we were performing a Shave-less FUE procedure in 50% of our hair transplant patients. They were also interested in our approach to anesthetizing the scalp and our use of Pen Implanters to allow for the physician to place all of the grafts instead of technicians.

I left the meeting excited about the future of North Atlanta Hair Restoration and inspired to keep on improving our delivery of care to remain a leader in the hair restoration industry.
