New Year’s Goals for Healthy Hair

It’s that time again. A new year is here and you are off to a great start on your resolutions. You are in the gym every day and are drinking lots of water. You have cleaned up your diet and you are eating your fruits and vegetables. And kale. There may even be a protein smoothie in your future. You know all the reasons you are getting healthy, but did you know how all these new disciplines are benefiting your hair? Here are three of the most common resolutions and how they can tie into hair health:


Exercise gets your blood pumping. Increased circulation brings more nutrients to your follicles. This helps your hair grow and become more resistant to thinning. Working out also reduces stress.  Stress can create an increase in cortisol, which in turn can cause thinning hair. By bringing your cortisol levels down, you may be preventing future hair loss.

Quitting Smoking

You know giving up cigarettes is good for your lungs. But, did you know it could help your hair, too? Smoking can constrict the blood vessels that bring vital nutrients and oxygen to your follicles. It also affects the skin all over your body. Your skin supports your hair, so the healthier your skin is, the healthier your hair will be. By quitting smoking, you increase the blood flow to your cells and improve your overall health (and hair) almost immediately.

Getting Organized

When life is overwhelming, your stress levels go up. Getting your house in order can not only bring calm, but it might help stem your hair loss, too. Streamlining your life frees up time to do the things you love. Happiness lowers stress, and we already know how bad that is for your hair. It also gives you time for the things you need, like exercise. You are also less likely to rely on hair-damaging habits, like smoking, to cope.
