Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is an increasingly popular hair loss solution.  Our physician and highly trained medical team place thousands of medical-grade tattoo dots just underneath the epidermis (outer portion of the skin) to mimic the appearance of hair follicles.  SMP is a safe sterile technique utilizing a specialized disposable three-pronged needle that vibrates at a desired speed by way of a computerized Micropigmentation machine.  By varying the contour, depth, pigment and distribution of dots, our skilled team delivers realistic results.

Just about anyone suffering from hair loss/thinning may benefit from Scalp Micropigmentation.  In those with mild hair thinning to moderate hair loss, SMP works by reducing the contrast of the visible scalp to the existing hair so that the scalp is concealed.  The existing hair is buffeted by the placed dots and made to look more dense, while the presence of the scalps fades away.  For men who shave their head, SMP gives the appearance of a “five o’clock shadow" and can be used to give the appearance of a full head of hair from the hairline to the crown.  It is often used to conceal scars or scalp defects, especially linear scars from previous strip-harvest hair transplant procedures.

North Atlanta Hair Restoration, Atlanta, GAThe process begins with the initial consult to discuss options and plan the design.  Scalp Micropigmentation typically requires three separate sessions each separated by at least four weeks.  Since placed SMP dots are very superficial, many of the initial dots either fade or are shed and must be reapplied. The first session can take as long as 4 to 6 hours (depending on the amount of scalp requiring coverage) and the second and third applications generally require less time.   By the third application, the SMP dots remain for up to 24 months and will likely require reapplication at a later date.

Patients experience minimal downtime/pain and leave the office with instant results.  Oral sedation can be taken prior to the procedure to make the process more comfortable.
