Traction Alopecia and Ethnic Hairstyles
What is Traction Alopecia?
Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss that occurs gradually over time due to constant stress on the scalp. Scalp stress is the result of tension and pulling too tightly on hair fibers for extended periods of time. The issue is most often seen in African American women because of the types of hairstyles they often wear. These hairstyles include:
- hair bands
- tight ponytails
- tight buns
Where does it occur?
The issue occurs around the hairline, most often at the temples and around the ears. It can also occur at the nape of the neck or on the crown of the head depending on the type of hairstyles being worn. Although the issue is seen most often in women, men that wear tight hairstyles can suffer from traction alopecia as well.
What can be done to stop and treat traction alopecia?
The most important step is to stop wearing the hairstyles that caused the issue in the first place. The scalp needs time to rest and recover. If the issue has progressed beyond the point were the hair can recover on it’s own, hair restoration may be the only other course of action.
What is a traction alopecia hair transplant?
It is a minimally-invasive procedure that harvests hair follicles from a donor area on the body. North Atlanta Hair Restoration offers procedures that do not require the use of scalpels, stitches or staples to harvest donor follicles. This results in less discomfort, no linear scars and less downtime. Results are typically seen after a few months and range by individual. The transplant creates permanent results that look natural because it uses your own hair follicles and techniques that make the transplant undetectable.
