What Is DHI Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplant technology has come a long way in the last several years.

Atlanta hair restoration surgeons are now able to provide incredibly natural-looking results for those facing hair loss, with minimal downtime and high levels of discretion.

Unlike the old days of FUT strip hair transplants, it’s now possible to get a hair transplant that grows in naturally, without anyone even knowing you’ve had anything done.

You can even go back to work right afterward without taking time off for extended recovery.

So, what’s changed?

Advances in Hair Restoration: FUE, Long Hair Transplants, and More

FUE aka Follicular Unit Extraction

First, FUE hair transplants have made it possible to have a hair restoration that:

  • Blends and grows very naturally—no more hair plugs or hair growing at odd angles
  • Has a high follicle viability rate
  • Produces little to no visible scarring
  • Heals more quickly
  • Preserves the donor site well for future transplants
  • Restores larger areas of hair loss
  • Can use beard and body hair, if necessary—ideal for those with advanced hair loss

FUE is performed by extracting individual follicular units using a specialized punch, then re-placing these grafts into the desired location for new hair growth.

The process is precise and allows for proper angling and spacing, allowing the surgeon to create a tailored and natural look—even right at the hairline.

No-Shave Procedures

Second, we now have the tools and techniques to perform long hair or Shave-less FUE hair transplants, which do not require shaving of either the donor or recipient sites.

With these, you can pretty much go right back to doing what you normally do—without having to hide a weird-looking haircut or wear a hat to conceal that you’ve had something done.

You walk out looking pretty much the same as when you walked in, and your existing hair length effectively conceals the transplant and donor areas as they heal, too.

How Does DHI Hair Transplants Differ From Regular FUE?

This brings us to one of the latest and greatest advances in hair restoration techniques:  DHI, or Direct Hair Implantation transplant surgery.

DHI is very similar to FUE, with one crucial difference—DHI uses a special implanter pen to place the harvested hair follicle in its new location.

Is DHI better than FUE?

DHI Is Faster

With the original FUE surgical technique, the surgeon must create an incision at the transplant site before placing each individual graft.

The DHI implanter pen lets surgeons skip this step—it makes the incision as it places the harvested follicle, all in one go.

This speeds up the hair transplant surgery process considerably.

Given that many hair transplant surgeries involve performing more than 1000 grafts in a session, the DHI pen could help a surgeon skip over 1000 steps in a single surgery.

That’s a lot of time saved, and it makes larger hair restorations possible in a single visit.

DHI Allows for Greater Precision

In addition to being faster, the DHI implantation process also allows the surgeon even more precision when placing grafts.

An experienced surgeon can use the pen to place each graft in exactly the right location, assessing and adjusting as they go to achieve good coverage and the most aesthetically pleasing results.

The DHI pen also allows for unparalleled precision in the angle of each graft placement, which is essential for a natural-looking transplant.

The pen allows for precision in the depth of each transplanted follicle, and it fully encases and protects the follicle during the process—both of these are crucial to preserving follicle viability.

All these factors together make DHI an excellent choice for a range of hair restoration candidates—including men and women, people with mild, moderate, or severe hair loss, those with ethnic hair, and more.

In short, DHI can produce transformative, incredibly natural results for patients, and it can do so in less time—and often with better results—than a non-DHI FUE transplant.

FAQ About DHI Hair Transplants

Who is a good candidate for a DHI hair transplant?

Most people who would be eligible for a FUE hair transplant would be considered good candidates for DHI.

If you are healthy enough for a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, have good donor sites available for grafting, and are not suffering from an autoimmune disorder that attacks hair follicles, chances are good that you’d do well with DHI.

Of course, only a hair restoration expert can properly assess you, so you’ll need to schedule a consultation to find out for sure.

Does DHI work for curly or ethnic hair?

Yes! DHI is actually a favored choice for curly or textured hair because it protects the hair follicles so well.

Unlike straighter hair, curly hair follicles are more widely spread apart, so they are more prone to bending and damage during the regular FUE implantation process.

With DHI, however, the pen fully encases the follicular unit, protecting individual hairs during placement and ensuring they’re situated properly for healthy growth.

Do I need to shave my head for DHI?

In the majority of cases, DHI can be performed as a Shave-less or No-Shave procedure.
